According to the 1860 census of Hot Spring County, Arkansas, Abner L. Gaines was 1 year old, far too young to have served in the Civil War. The only other Abner Gaines was the Chicot County man that David referred to. He served in the 1st Arkansas Mounted Rifles and later the 23rd Arkansas Infantry.

The General Hagar you mentioned might be James Hagan, of Alabama. One source states that he appointed brigadier-general in August 1863 while serving under Wheeler, but most sources state that the highest rank he achieved was colonel of the 3rd Alabama Cavalry.
