Re: Question for Anthony Rushing

Great information! I knew there was a letter from BG Holt in the Kie Oldham asking for a second regiment for Saline County, I just never new it had been formed. Who was the commander of the 66th? It sounds like the Militia was growing fairly rapidly in 60-61. When Governor Conway published the militia laws in 1860, there were 62 regiments. It appears that at least four more regiments were added by March 1862.

If you study the militia law (remember I am lawyer, not a historian), it says that each COUNTY could raise up to four Volunteer Companies, so the Saline Rifle Rangers would have been a county organization and not actually affiliated with either regiment. But if you study the election returns for the Volunteer Companies in the Kie Oldham papers, it is usually the senior regimental commander in the county who is certifying the election returns of the Volunteer Companies.
