LTC Archibald Patton was the instructor of the Pine Bluff Military Academy prior to the war and had come from Virginia. He may have been a relative of General George C. Patton's father.

In any case I do believe that he was wounded during the battle of Shiloh. But also there was an almost mass exodus of officers from the 1st Arkansas back to Arkansas after Van Dorn's abandonment of the state just after the Battle of Shiloh, the high percentage of wounded in the regiment from the battle itself dictated a reorganization of sorts, and the ending of their 12 month enlistments in late Arpil and Early May.
