The Confederate force was commanded by Col. James McIntosh with four companies of the 2nd Arkansas Mtd Rifles and the 3rd, 6th, and 11th Texas Cavalry. In total about 1,600 men of which about 130 were from the 2nd Arkansas Mtd Rifles under direct command of Capt. William Gibson. Rev. Stephen Foreman, a prominent Cherokee and the minister of the Park Hill Presbyterian Church, does not specify whether they were Texans or Arkansans, only that they were on there way back to "the State".
