Danny, my unlearned opinion (given the infamous black hole) is that the Vicksburg and Port Hudson regiments were "field" consolidated earlier in 1864 -- much like the 6th & 7th Arkansas in the Army of Tennessee -- and were reorganized as "new" regiments (1st-2nd-3rd Arkansas Consolidated) in September 1864. I suspect the consolidation was made permanent, and the old regiments formally superceded, to eliminate the many supernumary officer positions that existed (on paper, anyway) when the field consolidation was made. What do you think?
