Most of the information recorded is probably housed in the National Archives. All CSR's etc were filled out by transcribers looking at the original docs there. An example would be the original casualty reports for various battles. You can see some of these at Fold3 (old Footnote) and then find that is where they got the information to put on an individual soldier's record. I have manytimes wanted to read the general or special order for the men who were recommended for CSA Roll of Honor etc to find out if information exists on what they actually did to be recomended. That too is in the Natl Archives. So that is where I would probably start.
