Cocke's Regiment, Arkansas Infantry

Johnson's-Hawthorne's-Polk's Infantry Regiment [also called 39th Regiment] was organized in the summer of 1862. It served in McRae's, Fagan's, and A.T. Hawthorne's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department. The unit fought at Prairie Grove, reported 137 casualties at Helena, and was active at Bayou Fourche. Later it skirmished in a few actions in Arkansas, then was broken up before the surrender in June, 1865. The field officers were Colonels John B. Cocke, A.T. Hawthorne, Alfred W. Johnson, and Cadwallader Polk, and Lieutenant Colonel D.W. Ringo.

Jacob C. Moles, 1st Lieutenant, Company K, Hawthorn's Regiment, Arkansas Infantry,* enlisted July 20 1862 in Sebastian County by Maj. Wm. Gibson for the war, * promoted Captain December 16, 1862, age 33, born in Tennessee, resident of Scott Co., Ark.

* This Regiment was successively designated as Johnson's Regiment Arkansas Infantry, Hawthorn's Regiment Arkansas Infantry, Polk's Regiment Arkansas Infantry and Cocke's Regiment Arkansas Infantry

His record does not state when he was promoted Lt. Col., most likely when Col. Cocke was killed April 30, 1864

His file contains two pay vouchers and one receipt from the Clothing Bureau at Little Rock for a $50 coat April 2, 1863

Company K, Cocke's Regiment Arkansas Infantry, Company Muster Roll for the period July 20 to Oct. 31, 1862 dated Oct. 31, 1863, station of company not stated. Record of Events:

This company was mustered in as a cavalry company and was as such until 16th day of September when it was dismounted [after one month and twenty-seven days] by order of Col. Chas. A Carroll. Company was organized 4th July at Waldron and marched thence to Fort Smith and mustered into service on 20th July 1862. Was in the battle of Prairie Grove Dec. 7, 1862. /s/ J. C. Moles, 1st Lt.
