Re: Quantrill / Missouri soldier reenactors

Hello, I have seen that one John Barker rode with Quantrill. In my family, we have a John Wesley Barker who was b. NC; moved to TN; and then on to Craighead County, AR, where he is seen living with his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Stewart. I have been told by a descendant of John Wesley's that he rode with Quantrill; faked his death in KY; and returned to Craighead County where he is seen in the 1870 census. Then, about 1873, he moved to Newton County, AR. He lived in an area that was a Union stronghold. In fact, he lived close to Union Hill and is buried in the Union Hill Cemetery. I recently visited with a researcher in Jasper, and he told me that the area between Jasper and Parthenon was essentially Union. This is where John Wesley Barker lived. John Wesley Barker owned land adjacent to a Union family, Daniel Phillips. I have been unable to locate a John Barker who was a Confederate soldier, though I am sure that there are more places to look. John Wesley's wife had four brothers who all fought for the Conferacy. Three were killed and one was captured at Helena and imprisioned at Camp Douglas in Chicago. (He survived and is my great grandfather.) It would be surprising to think that John was a Union soldier, but I know families were often split. (I have Barnes family that served with the Confederacy and then a couple listed in Damn Yankees of Arkansas.) Three of the Stewart boys enlisted in Greene County: Adley Guinn, Jackson M., and John L. Stewart. The fourth, Abner Potts Stewart, enlisted in Jonesboro. I can't find John Wesley in any of these Stewart units. I can't find John Barker listed as a Union soldier either. So, I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the John Barker who rode with Quantrill. Any help, guidance, or perspective on this situation would be greatly appreciated. Linda Wilson
