Thank You R.D. Keever and ARushing for taking the time to reply and for sharing your knowledge. As always in research, new info creates new questions

Would I be correct in assuming that the purposes of a scouting operation would be looking for things such as encampments, stray soldiers, and food supplies at individual residences?

My next question is regarding the below statement in quotes:
“There was a Confederate camp located between Warren and the Saline River known as the Warren Camp. Troop movements were numerous between this camp and Camp Shanghai (later Selma) in Drew County.” [ http://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=840 ]

Here’s my dumb question – What was the general purpose of camps? I’m thinking maybe they were training grounds and lay-over places between battles/actions and maybe gathering spots for re-organization. Is that right?

As you have probably surmised, I’m new to military research. I’m researching an ancestor’s civil war involvement-currently untangling family stories from original records, as well as attempting to identify/sort out soldiers with the same name as my ancestor. I’ve been finding a lot of hints by using the search box on this list- I appreciate all of the contributions.
