After serving one year as 2nd Lieut of Co "K", 1st Arkanasas Mtd Rifles, Misc records show him as Captain of the Pioneer Corps, 1st Brigade, 3rd Corps, Army of the Mississippi. He requisitioned 100 Enfield rifles for his company on May 28, 1862, authorized by Col R G Shaw (?). Later Head signs as Capt commanding Battn of Sharpshooters, paid to Dec 10, 1862.
