Bryce,

I live right here close to the Hurrican Cr Battlefield... have tried to locate its exact location but yet to be able to prove. It is in one of two locations...one would be intact, the other probably destroyed due to bauxite mining in the 50's and 60's. I have researched the entire campaign from start of the scout to the end, and there was a prior little skirmish just a couple weeks earlier when a scout attempted the same thing, with Logan catching them closer to the old Southwest Trail.

Have you ever ran across any further information regarding the killing of the wounded and captured by the Federals there? Logan claimed it occurred to Gen Steele, who promised to look in to the matter as found inthe OR's. There are a couple of things that make me think it could have occurred.... one, the federals report (and it is stated on the historical marker) 27 CS killed and only one captured. They claim only one killed.

Now here is my question, how could a unit set up in ambush only kill one but yet have 27 killed with total surprise? There is this first person account of Mrs Mashburn who visited the battlefield and claimed the dead and dieing were all in a heap or pile. The local women buried the dead there at the local cemetery nearby. This makes me think that perhaps there was a mass killing. In the local cemetery I found the remnant of 6 Southern Crosses of honor. I have been told there used to be a whole bunch of those there back in the 30's, 40's and up to the 60's. We put up 6 VA markers where we found the location of the iron crosses, 4 in one row and just up and a little to the left the other two. To the north of these is a big open area with no headstones etc, the only big open spot in the cemetery. Now, I got to looking and scraping back the dirt and if you walk in a line towards the north away from the 4 markers and the two markers, I discovered, rocks of the same style in a perfect line, spaced very evenly apart and resulted in locating 25 of these. Makes me wonder who is there. Had a guy do his"witching" with brass rods and he showed burials there. But without further archaeological or ground resonating sonar its only my wild idea. I wondered if the women and old men buried the dead in individual graves or dug a long trench type burial. Only the ground sonar could show that. It would be great to find some more information regarding this but I have never ran across anything other than the OR's and the woman's account.
