Yes the skirmish at Aberdeen on Grand Prairie of July 6, 1862, the day before the Battle of Cotton Plant was part of the plan of nearly two months to keep Union gunboats and transports from ascending the the White River to carry supplies to Gen. Curtis at Batesville. From May. June, and early July almost every bend in the White River from DeValls Bluff to St Charles was used by Arkansas troops and even citizens to fire on the Union fleet advancing up the River. Col Nelson and the 10th Texas Inf with some artillery started down the river to St charles, but got there to late to try and save the fort there. Many skirmishes were fought up and down the River to keep the Union fleet from linking up with Gen Curtis at this time, with the skirmish at Aberdeen being the last one before the Battle of Cotton Plant. Finally the Union fleet had to retreat down the White River to safety because of the falling river level and so the connection of the fleet and Curtis was never made. Thus Gen Curtis made his way overland to Helena, Arkansas on the Mississippi River, and probably saved the fall of Little Rock for another year.
