The number of camps would be astronomial as units often camped 12 to 20 miles down the road from one day to the next for weeks at a time. It would also be non ending as new sources show up all the time describing an unknown camp, and this will go on for years to come. A lot of camp descriptions are so vague, that you can only pin it down to within a few miles of the site, and with years of worn shoe leather you might get lucky and come across the site.
One thing that would help would be to limit it to the larger or major armies camps prior to or after some major battle or strategic operations in the state. Even at that this would be a daunting task. And with a list like that the sell of medal detectors would probably quadruple.
