U.S. cavalry regiments were seldom intact during the Civil War. By the very nature of cavalry service, squads and companies were routinely detached for patrols, escorts, etc. To determine which companies were present in a specific action, you'll need to search the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, which is available on several websites.
