Yes I meant Confederacy...and while many leaders of Arkansas were as you stated the wealthy etc etc., Arkansas did not fight to defend that, they fought to defend their homeland, and that of their ancestors in the other states. As well as their understanding that the states had power to choose their course and not be oppressed by a too powerful central govt. Slavery was a key issue but not the human rights idea but the idea the gov't shouldn't be able to be too involved in the lives of individuals or individual states. So the Confederacy was fighting to defend the Constitution of the US as they defined it from their Revolutionary ancestors. While I am not a defender of the institution of slavery, I am a defender of a people who fought to prevent a central govt from becoming too powerful....AND look what it has evolved in to today. For a true history of slavery, one must look North as well, New England to be exact. They have a huge share in that institution as well, whether it be shipping efforts or textile mills later on, they too made money off the Africans and continued to as long as cotton was king. They also did not want to compete with slave labor, that is why they did not want slavery in the new territories, slave labor was cheaper than free white labor and they wanted them out of the new territories, most didn't care if it remained in the South as long as it didn't spread, and therein lies one of the big issues. Allowing one group to move west while trying to keep the other (slave owners) out. NOT for human rights issues, Northerners didn't really care about that. And anyone who says they were all about that only needs to answer one question...then why did it take 100 years under the rule of the US Govt for black people to really obtain their true civil rights as American citizens??

So to your last statement about the Confederacy, I would advise you to refrain from those remarks as this is not a site for political venting. You will be blocked by the administrator if that continues. Our ancestors died not because of one section of the country but due to two sections of the country coming to blows over differing economic and political power struggles. Hope this gives you something to mull over but I can't really say anything else, and won't. Don't think I can explain my view of it any shorter or clearer...then again it may just be my own belief and interpretation of why it all started and why Arkansas became embroiled in the struggle as they did.
