Thank you very much R.D. for the lookup.

Shipman Reed was born in Arkansas in August 1848. He must have fudged his age. He would have been 13 not 16 when he enlisted. He did in 1930. So died at age 82.

Shipman REED - Co. A 4th Arkansas Cavalry Reg. USA
Pvt - Enl 20 Sep 1863 at Ft Smith, AR. Age 16, ht 5’ 5”, eyes gray, hair light, complex light, farmer, born in Perry Co, AR.

For the majority of the war, the minimum enlistment age was 18. Boys who wanted to enlist but weren't old enough wrote the number 18 on a scrap of paper and put it their shoes, so when a boy was asked how old he was by the recruiting officer, he could truthfully say I am over eighteen and I stand on my word. (Library of Congress). The Common Soldier. Any truth in this?
