The hat cord would be gold, metallic gilt, for officers. Enlisted cavalry wore yellow wool. Also the officer's frock coat would not have any piping, that was for enlisted men only. The officer supplied his oun frock coat, unpiped, of fine broadcloth. The shoulder straps could have a yellow background for cavalry, black for staff, or marked with an "MS" to show a medical connection.
