Thanks for looking. When I went back and looked at the photo of the pistol it is actually inscribed as Lt. A. King, 33 Pa. Vols. How I got Kelly out of that is a mystery to me. In any case, Lt. Alvin S. King was a member of Co. K, 62nd Pa. Inf., which was initially designated the 33rd Pa. Inf. until mid-November 1861. The 62nd Pa. has a pretty good web site with a lot of information on Co. K and Lt. King. Here is the link: http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/pa62d/k.html King was wounded at Gaines Mill on 27 June 1862 and had a foot amputated. He is listed in the Philadelphia Inquirer of 22 July 1862, p. 3, col. 3, as being at Savage Station Hospital with an amputated foot. Given the wound at Gaines Mill and the position of the 62nd during the fight that day, I am more convinced that Sgt W.W. Trent, 42nd Va., picked up or captured the pistol on 27 June or the following day when the 42nd moved across the Gaines Mill battlefield to positions to the east of where the 62nd Pa. fought.
