Re: Gilham's manual
In Response To: Gilham's manual ()

Greg,

Thanks for the info...I've never seen a unit that listed carrying marker flags for use with Gilham's, so this is an interesting bit of info. I'll have to look into it more if I get the chance and see if anything more can be dug up about them. Aside from the examples of units doing things a bit differently, I have a few more examples that I have come across that I will have to detail later (Rev and Civil War). Offhand I can think of the 3rd PA Heavy Artillery, 30th Mass. Infantry, and Pickett's division at Gettysburg...if anyone is interested in details I will see what I can dig up from my notes.

I do have a copy of Richardson's book at work in our dept.'s library. Lots of great info, and I have tracked a few things he didn't know about t the time that only surfaced in the last few years. For not having any surviving "Gostelow" flags when he wrote the book (and now some are known to survive) I think it is interesting that he was able to guess at their appearance with only a couple of small differences. I also have reprints of Davis' books on flags of the revolution from the early 1900's. I almost bought one of the original 125 copies but decided on the reprint...if anyone would like to buy the original I believe I still know where a copy is available. I've been gradually looking through titles from old journals from the company of military historians and looking for good articles to order copies of. I am also always looking for other sources I have not come across yet (I have found many more than I have listed here, but these are some of the best).
