Hello all;
Just a note on Gregg's last with reference to British flags. Each infantry battalion would have had its own set of standards the King's or Queen's (depemdant upon who was on the throne)color and, a regimental color originally fielded on a flag to match the regimental facings of the regiment, this practice is still continued today. There is a long tradition of battalion flags being brought to cathedrel's or larger churches near that regiments home area and laid up with ceremony and then left to the ravages of time. Although more recently the flags associated with particular units are now preserved and kept in glass cases to allow public inspection such as my old unit flags which, are on display in York Minster with older flags; flags of the Napolionic era and later flags still hang exposed to the air.
Regards
John
