5th Iowa Cav, flags lost??

From the book, "Cavalry of the Heartland" "The Mounted Forces of the Army of Tennessee". By Edward G. Longacre.

On page 97, Red Jackson's cavalry regiment and the 6th Confederate Cavalry (1,250 men) near Dresden, Tennessee, (May 5th, 1862), encountered a small Union cavalry regiment. "Claiborne and Jackson, made short work of the Iowans, killing, wounding, or capturing at least half of them and mortally wounding their leader. They chased the survivors toward Paducah, Kentucky."

In the book, it does not state, what Iowa Regiment. But after some research only the 2nd and 5th Iowa were in that area at that time period. Now the 6th and 7th Iowa Cav, fought Indians in the Dakota's. The 1st, 3rd and 4th were not in that area either.

The 5th Iowa is listed in their regimental history having fought at Dresden. The 2nd Iowa did not. I 110% believe the 5th Iowa Cavalry lost 50% of their men. The 5th Iowa Cavalry website claims they fought at "Lockridge's Mill, TN" with a loss of 3 Killed, 7 Wounded and 64 Captured. For a total of 74 men. If that is 50% of the regiment, that would be only 148 men range. Companies C, I and M were detached. Major Carl Shaffer de Boernstein was mortally wounded, on May 6th, 1862.

On page 98, "Morgan's CSA cavalry neared Pulaski, Tenn on May 1st, 1862. They were warned by local citizens that a body of 400 Union cavalry had just passed by on the way to Columbia, Tenn. Morgan and his men captured 250 Union soldiers including civilian telegraphers." No info on what this Union cavalry regiment was, but I will search.

If anyone has any information on either of these, I would be more then grateful.

Have a great weekend,

Shawn
