For a complete review of this action and other cavaly skirmishes in the West during the spring and summer of 1862, see Kenneth A. Hafendorfer, They Died By Twos and Tens: The Confederate Cavalry in the Kentucky Campaign, pp. 44-49, including a map and current-day images of the site. Aside from the OR, vol. X, part 1, pp. 879 and 881-82; vol. LII, part 2, p. 310, he cites Charles C. Nott, Sketches of the War, (New York: 1865), pp. 126-29.

The Federal regiment involved included elements of the 5th Iowa Cavalry Regiment, Maj. Carl Shaeffer de Boernstein. Main elements on the Confederate side were Claiborne's 6th Confederate Cavalry and Jackson's 7th Tennessee Cavalry. No mention of a flag capture. Federal casualties are reported as four killed, six wounded and thirty-four captured, total force estimated at 250. Seems reasonable.
