Have been researching the flags (or surviving lack thereof) of those of Virginias Wises Legion/Brigade. Despite various mentions of flags being used and carried little found as to descriptions or survivors. They having taken part in western Va follies of 1861 then near total capture at Roanoke Island in Feb 1862, little is known of the flags. Mostly looking for anything that was associated with either the 46th or 59th Va. Nothing found so expanded to see what its other brother units might have had to get further clues.

The MOC has a flag captured at Saylers Creek identified to be the battle flag of the 26th Va (WD-363). This particular flag has many charactoristics of an ANV (Richmond Depot) flag with a few exceptions. The cross and star size ratio is roughly similar to a Richmond 6th bunting issue, yet the stars are grouped a bit closer towards the center more like a 3rd Bunting.. and void of the center star.. doesnt appear it ever had one... similar as to the habit early in the war with the silk & cotton issues.. Majority of the Richmond Depot flags I have examined over the years are fairly close to follow the respective patterns used at that time. Which 13 stars being the collective habit after 62 +/-.

Since Wise also served in a host of other areas including extensive duty in both NC and SC, I was pondering if this flag may have been obtained someplace there before they returned to Va in May 1864.... I have not found any other surviving Virginia unit flag of this particular arrangement, yet I have found several North Carolina units with identical 12 star ones...

Primary question being if anyone is familiar with any NC (or SC) depot that was making similar flags of this type and description during the roughly 1863 early 64 era... and/or is it known that some of the Richmond flag issues of perhaps 5-7th buntings did have 12 star variations of this type... or maybe even the Staunton Depot etc...
