.. Two miles south of Drewrys Bluff on the same (south) side of the James River. Just prior to Proctors Creek and the Dutch Gap Canal. Some period maps show "Signal Station", others say "Signal Tower". It was located amongst outer defenses of Drewrys Bluff / Richmond constructed in the summer-fall of 62 to better protect Richmond from the river approaches after the May 1862 Federal Naval threat up the river. They had a network of signal stations all along the river assuming as an early warning system of sorts. The immediate area also had a large river battery, several mortar batteries a little south that were utilized to harass the Feds digging the canal, as well as a torpedo station.
