.. that be the one !... There is abrupt high ground just back from the tidal flats, made great site for defense battery as well as the signal tower I assume. I have found period photos of the battery taken at the end of the war. If memory serves correctly the maps show the signal tower to the high ground just behind it. You had a nice commanding view of a good stretch of the river approaches from there. I had searched to find some evidence of its exact location for years to no avail. There were two "Gregory" farms there, one circa 1830 the other abt 1750 era, and one between them "Fendley" circa 1840's. Only the older one still stands today. These were once large land tracts and the dwellings themselves were about 1.5 miles back from the river. One of the Gregory houses was used by Federal Gen Heckman during the 1864 battle of Drewrys Bluff.. he was captured in the yard there too..

Another topic: Curious for information on what type of fixtures/connecters these multi-sectioned signal flags used?. Noting that many infantry staffs were probably a single piece pole. However many of us that also do reenactments/living history programs one cant always fit a 9 footer in the vehicle to take to an event, so many are trying to find at least a reasonable authentic alternative to construct a two section staff that at least has a "period" connector of some sort.

Ive only noted one Infantry staff that was "reported" to have been a Richmond QM issued that was two piece. This was the flag of the 10th Va that the bearer took home. It sold out of the family back about 1979 then was recently resold at auction with the pole. The pole had a brass or copper sleeve. Fixed to the bottom half and had a zig-zag expansion cut into the open end. Place the top section into it and it had two external adjustable wing-nut type of fasteners that held it secure. The large animated sized Spear point at the top was reported to be wooden and painted. I havent seen any others like this one and I had to really scratch my head about it. It looked to me more like something crudely home made for later display than something actually military issued.
