Re: Iowa Flag captured at Shiloh

The 109th Illinois was mostly raised in Southern Illinois, aka "Little Egypt". Company K was not raised in Southern Illinois.

Companies: A, A,C,E,F,G,H,I (Union County)
Companies: B and D, were mixed with some men from Union, Alexander, Jackson and Johnson (Counties)
Company K: Pulaski County

Basically the problem with Southern Illinois, going back 20-40 years, many Kentucky and Tennessee people moved into Southern Illinois.

The 109th pretty much deserted in a Six month period. Another Illinois regiment did the same. To the point, Grant had to step in and disband both regiments.

The Blue&Grey magazine did a great job on "Holly Springs" but leaves questions to who lost flags and who captured flags.

Have a good morning, Charles
