Re: Prototype ANV battleflag photo?

It was one of the Cary Cousins flag. They made at least one
more for the Washington Artillery of New Orleans. This latter
flag also survives in the collections of Confederate Memorial
Hall in New Orleans.
The flag carried by the 5th Company Washington Artillery and now
in the hands of Dr. Lonnie Kiem was presented to Col. J. B. Walton
by the Cary cousins.
Walton returned to New Orleans to help recruit the 6th Company. When
he arrived the City was being emptied of troops in the reenforcement
of Johnston's Army at Corinth just before Shiloh.
The 5th Company being among those sent to Johnston was without a
flag. Walton's daugthers suggested that they take the "Cary" flag.
This was done and the flag used at both Shiloh and Perryville. When
the unit was supplied with a new "Hardee" pattern flag the "Cary"
flag was sent to Lieut Vaught's family then in Mobile. While in Mobile the battle honors were placed upon it.
The flag remained in the possession of the Vaught Family until donated to Confederate Memorial Hall in 1900.
At NO time was it said to be a prototype of any kind. That claim
was not made until the 1990's.
