Shawn, my apologies for going all pedantic in reply to your post. I just recently went through a discussion over the way the term "casualties" is used in news reports and I am still a bit miffed over its incorrect useage.

The flag in question is believed to be that of Captain J. N. Whitford's Battalion of North Carolina Heavy Artillery. The full inscription reads "FORT THOMPSON, / CAPT. J. N. WHITFORD, / Commanding". The flag was one of several captured at the Battle of New Berne in March 1862 and sent to the city of Worcester MA by Co. E, 25th Massachusetts iInfantry in April of the same year.
