The August 1 letter to the Courier from the battle field at Manassas described the “sneak-ing cunning and perfidious meanness of our enemy.” They used a flag which on one side showed the colors of the Confederate States and on the other the United States. The “column that flanked us showed the Confederate Flag until they got to the position where they could do us the greatest possible injury, then turned to us the Federal side and fired.”
