This seems to have two components to it for First Manassas. The Rome Light Guards were part of the 8th Georgia Infantry, raised mostly in the Rome, Georgia area. The second part about the flag we may never find. There are a number of reports of each side using flags from the other to fool their enemies but I discount many of them as the use of CS First Nationals (for Confederates where Union troops thought they were US flags) or some US flags that were narrower (and thus home made or very early war issues before the depot made flags arrived in number) that resembled to the Confederates, one of their First National flags.
