Re: Flag of 57th GA Infantry smuggled from Vicksbu

John,

Happy to help.

I forgot to mention that the variant of the Bowen pattern flag of the 39th Georgia got smuggled out of Vicksburg only to be captured in the regimental baggage on top of Lookout Mountain in November 1863 when Joe Hooker's troops drove the Confederates from it. The 39th GA was part of Cumming's Brigade/Stevenson's Division, who had been moved off the mountain the evening before to take their place in a new part of the Confederate siege lines but their wagons had not yet followed them in this move - hence them still being there when Hooker attacked.
