Alabama flag lost at Gettysburg

Some discussion, including on this board, revolves around an Alabama flag captured by the 88th Pennsylvania on the first day at Gettysburg, 1 July 1863. John Vautier, in his book on the 88th, reports the capture of a flag of the 16th Alabama, from O'Neal's brigade. Vautier is, of course, mistaken, and this flag may actually have come from either the 26th or 12th Alabama. An article by Paul C. Cooksey in The Gettysburg Magazine, volume 40, page 27, mentions the possibility of this being a third flag of the 26th, because the first was returned to the governor on 20 April 1863, and a second flag was turned in at the end of the war. If the flag is indeed that of the 26th, it would require significant changes to our thinking about the deployment of O'Neal's brigade on that day. On the other hand, I have recently come across a book on Philadelphia in the war, and recall reading under a footnote to the 88th Pennsylvania that the flag had belonged to the 12th Alabama (the 88th also captured a flag from Iverson's NC brigade). So my question to the readers of this board: What is known about the flags of the 12th Alabama - is it even possible that the flag in question could have belonged to the 12th Alabama?
