Re: Alabama flag lost at Gettysburg

It's a confusing fight to be sure. But as Rob points out in his post, the 88th took both flags about the same time. That means at the time they were facing west with both the 83rd New York and 12th Massachusetts on their right. Over on the Confederate side, the 12th Alabama was on the right of O'Neal's brigade, meaning it was closest to Iverson's NC brigade. To have taken the flag of the 26th means that the 26th would have had to cross the Mummasburg Road and then moved in a southwesterly direction across the front of the 12th Alabama, exposing their left flank to the 12th Massachusetts. Or in the alternative alignment, O'Neal's brigade actually began their charge further to the west and the 26th came down on the western side of Seminary Ridge, but that would suggest the 12th Alabama would have been squeezed out of the fight, which is not supported by extant accounts. My own view is that the 26th was near the crest of Seminary Ridge and its right was relatively protected by the depression in the Mummasburg Road at that point, which was then able to harass the Federals when they advanced west into the field against Iverson. The 12th Alabama entered into the field between Iverson's left and the 26th, pitting them against the Federals, including the 88th Pennsylvania, when the latter moved against Iverson's left.
