Tom--I always enjoy your posts--very insightful and full of pertinent details. We may never sort out if the flag came from the 12th or 26th Alabama. I don't put much stock in Vautier's identification that it was from 26th Alabama. That comes one of his later writings in the National Tribune Scrap Book published in 1909. (this is available in full text on google books). By then, Baxter's men realized that the original identification of 16th Alabama was wrong. He corrected himself with the assumption that it had to be the 26th Alabama. But I don't think he had any new specific information for making that call.
