Re: Flag of Twenty-Fourth Alabama Infantry.

George,

The Chicago folks got it in the 1920s from the late George Gunther Collection and they have it IDd as a flag taken from the Vicksburg Courthouse. The late Howard Madaus came up with the 24th Alabama ID and I do not know how he did so unless he got into something that I have not seen like Gunther's own records. What we do know is that two other flags of similar nature survive for units of Dea's Brigade and the 24th was part of this brigade. The 19th Alabama of the brigade may have lost a similar flag at Missionary Ridge but that one cannot be located.

There are some Trans-Miss flags that resemble this flag was well from Arkansas units that were taken in battle including at Helena in July 1863.
