Hi Perry,

The flag sold at auction. I got to see it before then courtesy of a Gen. Burbridge descendent. Burbridge brought it home from the war and kept it in his family. It was quite common not to officially report CS flag captures as that meant that it was supposed to have been sent to the US War Department. Sometimes even when CS flags were captured and reported they were not sent in. See Grant's OR report of 85 flags taken and Vicksburg or Gen. Rosecrans' report of 18 flags taken at Corinth, MS in 1862. None of them made it to the War Department. Dozens of captured flags were not sent in.

The period and post-war accounts that came with the Burbridge items suggested more that the flag was taken in battle than anything else. As you know Morgan had reformed a command of dubious quality to go on this raid and he got hammered at Cynthiana with part of his command scattered by Burbridge. It is possible that it was taken from a building but I did not draw that conclusion fter reading the material.

Hope this helps.
