Just an aside, in re your exchange with Greg: I doubt that the relatively new HoH meant quite the same thing at the time that it has become a century later, and a flag (especially if it were wrestled from the bearer in the front line combat) might well have meant more that "a little decoration." I was reminded of WW2 Bill Mauldin's "Up Front"cartoon of the Dogface standing in front of an officer handling out Purple Hearts, and declining one, saying, in effect, "Nah, I already have a couple of those, just give me some aspirin."
