Re: Captured Flags. Battle Flags/Regimental Flags?

Ben,

I was going to mention the Staunton Depot flags. I think at least three exist now and Howie Madaus stated that there was no new pattern unless three examples could be found. While the resembled the Richmond Depot ANV flags there were narrower blur crosses and some cotton (I think - I will have to pull my file for these flags to be sure) was also used where ANV flags were all wool bunting save for the polished cotton fimbriation and stars and the cotton canvas hoist edge.

John Breckinridge's Division operated in the Valley which was supplied by the Staunton Depot but either the depot could not equip his units at the time (and all depots were subject to cloth availability) or, as Ryan posited, he chose not to use them.

In Ryan's list of flags taken at Third Winchester at least one of the flags from Patton's Brigade was a Second National.

With regard to Virginia state flags, I have copies of all of those invoices from the VA Governor's Papers and VA equipped her units with state flags from October 1861 through February 1865. The 36th VA flag taken at Third Winchester was an February 864 issue. It was made by one of the several contractors who painted these flags, this one being made by John Vanni.
