Re: Third Winchester flags - WD 202
In Response To: Third Winchester flags ()

Ref ur 12 Jan 2014 8:31 p.m. subj 3rd Winchester Flags. Much appreciate clarification in re WD 202. In MoC's "Colours of the Gray," p. 41, flag is listed simply as "white field," but (correctly) as Fitz Lee's captured signal flag. Ryan's list ID'd the captors as 49th PA. In my study of CS Army signal flags, I had this one in questionable status -- a white flag being displayed on the field?? Now to read your additional "plain white with shadowing from a square central device (probably red)". The listing of six known CS Army signal flags you, Howie and I have held since 2005, at least, does not include WD 202, and I'd be pleased to add it. But whose are the amplified comments, especially concerning the visible shadowing? (This could reveal machine vs. hand sewing, and construction -- type of cloth and two or three layer vs. cut-out to minimize thickness as noted on (later?) US Army signal flags ).

While recent threads (Staunton Depot production, and related) have concentrated on battleflags, at least one comment touched on hospital flags, thus army signal flags would seem fair game for consideration if a tie-in could be established. (Valley District expansion of Imboden's visual signal comms westward under "Captain" Bartlett could suggest need for additional flags, as with the Massanutton line southward toward Staunton). So far I carry only WD 111 (Sep 1862) as probable "Richmond" origin.

There may be some light that can be shed on my narrow concentration and the broader one of the Staunton production recently stirring the pot.
