Frederick,

Per below:

>>>>>Understood that Johnsons Brigade units on their arrival up to Virginia about May 1864 received new Richmond Depot ANV flag issue, along with new uniforms and such also.... Which soon was lost the new flag at Drewrys Bluff on May 16th.... they apparently went back to using their previous AOT Hardee pattern flag... most/all? of those being also taken at Weldon RR on Aug 22nd... I have this indicated for the 44th Tenn... but wasn't completely sure if same reflected the 17/23rd Tenn also.... >>>>

The 17th/23rd Tennessee lost their Hardee battle flag (now at the MOC) at Petersburg in the June 1864 fighting along the Dimmock Line. This one is WD 144. Also lost from Johnson's Brigade was the Hardee flag of the 25th/44th Tennessee which is WD 145. The 63rd Tennessee also lost their flag, WD 147. but this one is an ANV flag.

From this I think we can deduce that some of Johnson's regiments used ANV flags and some Hardee flags that they brought with them from Tennessee. In 1865 the 25th/44th Tennessee Infantry also lost another ANV flag - WD 344.

By the way - it was not the intention for Johnson's Brigade to go to the ANV, nor, I think, Archie Gracie's Alabama Brigade. These were "loaned" to Longstreet for the East Tennessee Campaign and I think the plan was for them to be returned to the Army of Tennessee once Knoxville was taken. As we know that did not happen and when Longstreet moved east of Knoxville, effectively cutting himself off from Chattanooga, these two brigades were stuck.
