Re: 1st Alabama Volunteers Flag Returned

Bob --

For purposes of documentation (which you always do so carefully!), the 1861 regimental flag represents the 1st Alabama Infantry. That organization went out of service when the original twelve-month term expired in January 1862.

However, officers and men who carried the flag in 1862 belonged to the 1st Alabama Artillery. Col. Steedman's military service file includes a paper concerning the organization of this command dating from mid-March 1862.

For what it's worth, all 1861 documents signed by officers of this command refer to the regiment as '1st Ala Vols', '1st Ala. Regt. Vols.' or '1st Ala. Vol. Regt'. For some reason the term "infantry" rarely appears in contemporary records. Cards produced by War Department clerks many decades after the war use the term, but otherwise it's strangely absent in military service files.
