I am trying to find some way of authenticating my Fathers piece of flag and notes and letter from Appomattox and letters from Virginia etc.
I am in the UK and my Father collected items about the Wild West and American Civil War since the 1940's .
I have I have a, (6.25 by 2.75 inch), original piece of the Confederate Flag that floated over the Rebel Capitol of Richmond up until the time that the Confederates left their capital just before the Appomattox surrender and was taken down by the victorious Union Army. Further more there are 5 confederate bank notes which were part of General Lee's own funds which he surrendered at
Appomattox and were receipted by A. B. Lawrence.
This is all confirmed by the letter which is also included here from Lieutenant Colonel A. B. Lawrence Quarter Master of the 24th Army Corp. of the James. There are also 9 letters to a Florence Campbell dated 28 to 30 years after the end of the civil war.
The letter reads "OFFICE CHIEF QUARTER-MASTER 24th ARMY CORPS.
Richmond Va., May 15th 1865
This is to certify,
That the piece of bunting hereto attached is a piece of the Confederate Flag that floated over the Rebel Capitol in this city cut into pieces for distribution as a significant memento-
That the Confederate Notes are a part of the funds of the Army surrendered by Gen. Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Va. and were receipted for by me as such on account of the Quartermasters Commissary and Medical Departments of that army reported to the U.S. Commission and declared valueless-
A. B. Lawrence Chf. Qr. Mr. 24th. Army Corps and of the U.S. Forces at Appomattox"
I know very little about American civil war items as my Dad was the expert so I need help authenticating these items. My Dad would have known who to approach and how because he only ever collected genuine items and never copies or reproductions.
I would be very gratefull for any expert help you can give or for pointing me in the right direction.
Best wishes, Billie.
