Re: 22nd Indiana Flag (fragments)

Shawn,

The 22nd Indiana was Jefferson C. Davis' regiment. My gg-grandfather and two uncles were members of this hard-fought unit. I recall reading this statement about poor treatment somewhere, but I really haven't investigated further as to the substantiation of these claims.

The terms "bested again", as I recall comes from an O.R. report for the battle of Stones River / Murfreesboro. The 22nd Indiana held a line in the late afternoon and evening at Perryville and suffered terrible casualties that made the list of highest number of deaths in a regiment in a single battle. Out of approximately 350 men engaged they suffered 100 KIA at Perryville. They were also part of a famous story, where Leonidas Polk at dusk, rode into the Union lines (22nd Indiana)and when confronted, realized his mistake and posed as a Union officer before making a run back to the Confederate lines. A Confederate brigade was approaching, Liddell's I believe. In the darkness, Polk pointed out the 22nd Indiana just paces away and Liddell's men opened fire. Here is where a large number of the 22nd Indiana's casualties occurred in the battle including the regiment's commander.

In the battle of Stones River / Murfreesboro, you are correct the 22nd Indiana was a part of Post's brigade on the Union right. Though the 22nd Indiana put up a good fight they were swept away just like the rest of the brigades on the Union right on the early morning of Dec. 31st, 1862. Half of the regiment was in line and the other half had been assigned to support a battery. The two halves got separated and with one half fleeing all the way to Smyrna where they were captured and paroled by Confederate cavalry. The other half continued in the battle through the 2nd of January.

I am also not aware of the 22nd Indiana ever losing a flag.

Jim
