Re: New Civil War Battle Flag Display Online

Hello,

A very nice display! Too bad that most of the Union flags shown were not used at Bentonville and neither was the 8th Texas Cavalry flag.

The 8th Texas Cavalry lost the flag depicted in October, 1864 near Rome, Georgia. This is documented in evey history of the unit that I am aware of. The flag was made by Nashville ladies and smuggled through the lines to the regiment in the Summer of 1864 and the 8th Texas Cavalry lost it not long after they received the flag.

The Union flags with the battle honors for "Bentonville," and "Raleigh," were not used in either case. Battle honors were put on Union flags for those colors replacing the flags used in those battles (as was the case in the vast majority of Confederate flags). Late in the war new colors were ordered for loads of Union regiments and they contained battle honors for the very late fights of the Civil War including the 1864 Tennessee Campaign and the1865 North Carolina Campaign. These flags replaced the flags that saw action on those fields.

I am happy that CWPT put up the display of the flags as anytime some Civil War flags can be displayed it is betetr for us all.
