Re: Capt. Leroy G. Lesley's Homeguard (Hernando)

Jeff,

The only mentions I've ever seen of this company were in the state pension records.

The "official" home guard companies in Florida were organized following a July 1864 executive order from Governor John Milton that all male citizens of the state over the age of 15 organize themselves into military units to repeal anticipated invasion by Union forces.

The organizational orders for this force, officially designated the 1st Florida Militia but usually called the "home guard," specified that at least one company would form in each county. They were to elect a captain and other officers and drill at a central location to prepare themselves for service in emergency situations.

Very few rosters survive of any of these companies, although in one of his letters from late summer of 1864 Governor Milton mentions that 38 companies had been organized across the state.

Best,
Dale
