The Florida in the Civil War Message Board

There are a few other things that I hope to get into tomorrow. I'm going early to the board meeting. Another member and myself are coming off the board next month when the new ones take over. She and I talked today and we think your book is the one we realy need to add to the holdings the society has onsite. Since we have our own, independent library and all the bells n whistles, we continue the tradition of outgoing officers picking titles for the collection. It was a no brainer for me. When we get them to say "Aye", and we will, I'll just get my copy then too. It's a must have with my Parkers in several Florida companies. The compiled accounts and records in the books such as yours are very conducive to the research area. We have Arthur Greenes Confederate Boots and Saddles and today, I was able to show a lady informaton she did not have on an ancestor who was in that book. Some days, it all falls in place. That's a good day.

The only drawback to having our own, free standing library is some of the holdings we used to be able to pull to use for research are still at the main library downtown in the CW section. We are hoping to duplicate some of them because a few were useful in both areas of the main library. We are also hoping to have more family history compilations to help build the collection. We have some big goals and some believe we are not going to cross them off of our to do' list but they haven't seen us team up to set them straight. The number of people, both local and out of town who show up and are trying to find information is a growing. For our Seminar last month we were fortunate to be able to have Elizabeth Shown Mills as the speaker. Her reputation alone brought people from east of Tallahassee and a couple from Texas. New York was represented too.

When you said he died post war, do you know if it was before the Pension applications were started? The Heritage Book of Holmes County said there were may CW veterans living in the Leonia, Florida Community. Most went there for the work in the lumber business. I wish they'd had a list of those vets. I did check the Heritage Books for Holmes, Jackson, Okaloosa in Florida and the Conecuh County book in Alabama. Sherry Johnston,Librarian Genie, resident Wizard and Queen of All knowledge in the area surrounding Conecuh County may know something. That photographic memory of hers is a real gem.

With people of knowledge such as Bruce searching, if the info is out 'there', you will find it. Will let you know if I hit on anything.

Pam
