Re: Gods and Generals

I can easily imagine the prayer scene between Tom Jackson and Jim Lewis actually happening. The General was just that sort of genuine person. Following Jackson's wounding, Jim Lewis, who in later years referred to Jackson as the "dear old General", was one of the few individuals who was allowed to enter the General's room "without express permission". Lewis spent a good deal of time staying with Jackson and helping to care for him during his last days. Surely during that time, and very likely before that time, their conversations must have turned to both family and faith. Unfortunately, we today are left with only clues and our imaginations.

As to the lyrics of "Bonnie Blue Flag", the words were often changed in songs, just as they are today, whether intentionally or accidentally. (Just think if Weird Al had been around then!) Various verses listed various Confederate states and their contributions to 'the cause'. Verses increased as did the secession. Melodies were also frequently borrowed - as "Bonnie Blue Flag" was for "The Homespun Dress",or, "The Southern Girl". In fact, the melody of that song was originally borrowed from one called "The Irish Jaunting Car".

I really did not intend this reply to become a term paper. Really!
