Re: 1st Georgia Reserves (Fannin's)

Re Col. Fannin being at Fort Tyler. The Chattahoochee Valley Historical Society has bulletin about the Battle at West Point.....published in 1957. In it are some quotes by Col. Fannin about being sent to LaGrange [his home] to meet the invading U.S. troops....."I received no notification of either my regiment or the invading forces until Sunday morning. While entering the Baptist Church I saw about a half dozen men collecting on the public square. I left the church and learned that a telegram had been received from Brig. Gen R. C. Tyler, commanding the post of West Point, Georgia, stating that the enemy was advancing upon that place. I immediately ordered that all Confederate soldiers in the hoslpitals able to perform duty, and those on furlough, be furnished with arms and ammunition, and report to the Atlanta and West Point Railroad depot at once."

"At the time I gave orders to press into service and hold any engine that could be had at the depot - I found 18 men at the depot. We mounted the engine tender and moved rapidly in the direction of West Point..etc"

And further....."I am well aware that some have placed the number of Confederates [in the fort] above this number (64 men). But there were others captured by the enemy before they reached West Point and at night the prisoners were aggregated."

Troup County (GA) historian, Clifford L. Smith states that 121 men [and boys] were engaged on that day and has a list.

At any rate there were few able bodied soldiers there and none of his troops. I think holding Wilson off from around 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.was a feat in itself.
