The National Park Service index shows A. J., J. A. and T. W. Cowan in Company "B", Russell's 4th Alabama Cavalry. This company was recruited at Gadsden in Cherokee County, Ala., and would be more likely to include Georgians from Floyd County. It also had a colorful history, being part of Nathan Bedford Forrest's original battalion.

The widow of J. E. Cowan of Marshall County, Ala. made an Alabama pension application:

This was probably the James Cowan listed in Company "H". J. R. Cowan of Company "F" belonged to a company from Madison County, the county seat being Huntsville.

Please contact me at pittsaj14@hotmail.com if I can locate and copy any Confederate service record or a Georgia pension application. A library that has all Confederate (and some Federal) service records from the National Archives is located within reasonable driving distance of my office. Alabama pension applications are also available.
