Can anyone provide further details of the Naval Works Battalion, or Whitesides Naval Battalion Georgia Infantry (Local Defense), please? I want to confirm if it was called into service of the Confederate States, or merely for State service. The Local Defense designation seems to indicate State service. Is anyone doing a study of this unit? I have collected the names of a few persons who served. One account is obviously incorrect in assuming that the members of this unit were actually in Confederate Naval service. Any help whatsoever would be much appreciated.
